This is an example of a home constructed single valve receiver from the 1920’s. Many wireless enthusiasts chose to build their own sets from kits.

The receiver relies on two inductive coils for coarse frequency tuning. With the aid of the lever mounted on top of the set the coils are moved towards or away from each other to receive optimum signal levels.
